How Course Completion Time is Calculated

How Course Completion Time is Calculated

This article explains how learners earn certificates and the role of course completion time in Edovo.

Earning Certificates

Learners receive certificates upon completing courses and will either achieve a “passed” or “needs improvement” score. (

Each course outlines the criteria for achieving a passing score, and one of those criteria is spending an adequate amount of time engaged with the course material.

Estimated Course Durations

Edovo calculates estimated course durations based on the content within each lesson. This calculation considers the type of content (e.g., text passage, video) and applies standard multipliers for each type. For example, text passages are estimated based on an average reading speed of 200 words per minute.

The estimated time for each content type is added together to determine the overall estimated course duration. Additionally, a minimum required time is set for each content type to ensure learners dedicate sufficient time to absorbing the material.

Criteria for Estimated Time per Content Type

Title/Text:

  • Average reading speed: ~240 words/minute

  • Estimated time: 200 words/minute (0.3 seconds per word)

  • Minimum required time: 600 words/minute (0.1 seconds per word)

PDFs:

  • If a word count is available, the same calculation as Title/Text applies.

  • Otherwise:

    • Estimated time: 60 seconds per page

    • Minimum required time: 15 seconds per page

Multiple Choice Questions:

  • Estimated time: 15 seconds per question

  • Minimum required time: 5 seconds per question

Multi-Select Questions:

  • Estimated time: 60 seconds per question

  • Minimum required time: 5 seconds per question

Open Response Questions:

  • Word-length:

    • Estimated time: 15 seconds per question

    • Minimum required time: 5 seconds per question

  • Sentence-length:

    • Estimated time: 30 seconds per question

    • Minimum required time: 5 seconds per question

  • Paragraph-length:

    • Estimated time: 60 seconds per question

    • Minimum required time: 5 seconds per question

Audio/Video Media Files:

  • Estimated time: The length of the file

  • Minimum required time: 0.7 times the length of the file

Recap

  • The estimated course duration is a guideline based on average completion times. Your actual time spent may vary depending on your reading speed, learning style, and engagement with the material.

  • Completing a course requires spending at least the minimum required time for each content type.
