Understanding Course Scores: Passed vs Needs Improvement
When a learner completes a course, they receive one of two potential final scores:
- Passed, meaning the learner met all requirements for completing the course with evidence of effort, meaningful engagement, and a sufficient grasp of the material.
- Needs Improvement, meaning the learner failed to meet at least one of the requirements deemed necessary to pass.
Final scores are displayed on certificates and transcripts as well as within the Learn app.
Earning a passing score
To pass a course, a Learner must meet all of the relevant requirements of the course:
- They need to achieve an overall quiz score of 70%* or higher if the course contains quiz questions. Quiz scores are calculated based on the correctness of closed-ended questions such as multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. For each lesson, the quiz score is calculated based on the number of a Learner’s correct answers divided by the total number of closed-ended questions. The overall quiz score for the course is the average of quiz scores for each lesson. *Note: while 70% is Edovo’s default minimum passing quiz score, each agency may configure this value to meet their standards when they first enable Edovo. See more about this configuration here.
- They need to earn an overall Open response score of 80% or higher if the course contains open response questions. Open response scores are a measure of Learner effort in open ended questions, like essay or short answer questions. See more about how Open response scores are calculated here.
- They need to spend adequate time in each lesson. Edovo calculates an estimated and minimum duration for each lesson. In order to spend adequate time in each lesson, the Learner must spend time equivalent to the minimum duration in the lesson. Unlike quiz and open response scores which are calculated based on the Learner’s most recent lesson take, a Learner’s time spent is accrued over all takes and time spent reviewing the material in a lesson because all of a Learner’s engagement with the course contributes toward their understanding and practice of the material. Read more about how course completion time is calculated here.
The Edovo Learn app guides learners through not only completing but passing each course by displaying pass requirements before the Learner enrolls in the course, showing Learners whether they are on or off track at the end of each lesson, and encouraging them to retake any lessons where they didn’t meet all pass criteria.
Note: Because learning resources are purely supplemental, only courses track progress and score completion in this way.
