[CONTENT PROVIDERS] What is an item & how does pricing work?

On Edovo, content comes in many shapes—courses, podcasts, videos, newsletters/books—but what we count as a "content item" is based on how our learners see content on the Edovo platform. This article breaks down exactly what qualifies as one item, how item-based pricing works, and how to plan your submissions to get the most value from your publishing tier.

Idea
Your cheat sheet for this article
  1. We'll tell you what kind of content you can upload and what counts as a "content item" so that you can choose the right publishing tier that you'll need.
  2. You can choose from four different publishing tiers, and each tier allows for a specific number of content item uploads.
  3. Pricing is based on the number of items, not the file size of your individual uploads or how many lessons or elements are in your course.
  4. A content item is a single, publishable unit of content on Edovo—whether it’s a podcast episode, a 6-lesson course, or a 10-minute video.
  5. The cost for a publishing tier is one-time and up front. There are no recurring fees.
  6. One item = one publishing slot. No matter how big or small.

What kinds of content can I add?

Here are the 5 types of content a learner has access to, and the image below shows you how a learner initially sees these types of items on the Edovo platform:
  1. Course: These are graded, certificate-eligible curriculum with multiple sections & varieties of engagement types (watch, read, listen, practice). They are subject to specific standards (i.e. clear learning objectives, knowledge checks, etc.) These are built out in our curriculum-building tool called the Edovo Editor.
  2. Resource: Similar to a course, but these are not graded and not certificate-eligible. Resources still have multiple sections and engagement types, but they're more for exploration and for topics that aren't intended for someone to be tested on.
  3. Video: Often, these are video series, vlogcasts, or documentaries (accepted file type: mp4 compressed to 480p)
  4. Audio: Often, these are audiobooks and traditional podcasts (accepted file type: mp3)
  5. Reading: Content uploaded as a single PDF, like a book, magazine, or pamphlet (accepted file type: PDF only)

What counts as 1 item?

Using the same example above, what's pictured counts as 5 items, because that's how it appears to a learner:

  1. Course: 1 Item
  2. Resource: 1 Item
  3. Video: 1 Item
  4. Audio: 1 Item
  5. Reading: 1 Item

Every piece of content, no matter its size or format, goes through the same rigorous screening, review, and publishing process. For this reason, each submission is counted as one item, regardless of whether it’s a course, video, audio file, or document.

Pricing - Publishing Tiers

As a reminder, you can mix-match content items in any tier. So if you buy the Basic Tier (like in the first example), you can use your 5 allowed items for 1 course, 1 resource, 1 audio file, 1 video file, and 1 reading file. Or 5 courses. Or 2 resources and 3 videos. You decide how to use your upload allowance.

Each tier is active for one year. So as soon as you sign your agreement for that tier, you have an entire year to use your upload allowance. And if you use up your allowed uploads before your year is up, you can just purchase a new tier, or pay the smaller overage allowance if you just need to go over your tier level by 1 or 2 items.

We hope that helps, and if you'd like to look at a quick overview of the upload process, this article is a good next step
