We protect content by controlling the ecosystem in which it lives, ensuring that educational materials remain within the hands of the learners they were intended for.
How Edovo Protects Your Content
Instead of software-level encryption, Edovo relies on hardware and network restrictions to prevent unauthorized distribution.
Closed-Network Delivery: Content is accessed via secure, facility-monitored networks that do not permit external internet browsing or file transfers.
Hardware Lock-Down: On standard tablets in correctional facilities, devices are strictly managed to disable downloading, external saving, or peer-to-peer sharing.
Restricted Access Points: For partners requiring the highest level of protection, content is restricted from being viewed by individuals released from custody (our "Edovo Go" continued access feature for formerly incarcerated individuals) or Chromebook-based facilities, where device-level controls are less stringent.
URL Obscurity: Content paths are non-indexed and structured to be inaccessible to the general public or standard search engines.
Learners on Edovo can engage deeply with materials in a way that mirrors a digital learning experience on the outside:
Stream and View: Read books, watch videos, and listen to audio directly through the Edovo interface.
Persistent Access: Return to materials as often as needed while their account remains active.
Focused Learning: Use materials on secure, facility-approved devices designed solely for rehabilitative purposes.
Because our environment is physically and digitally restricted, learners are prevented from:
Downloading or Exporting: There is no "Save As" or export function available to learners for proprietary content.
Redistributing: Files cannot be moved from the Edovo ecosystem to personal devices, email, or cloud storage.
Printing: Print functions are not available in the platform, preventing the creation of unauthorized physical copies.
Our approach ensures a balance between content security and reliable access. We focus on environmental security because traditional DRM standards are often incompatible with the specialized hardware used in correctional environments.
Hardware Limitations: Most devices distributed in corrections are highly customized and "closed." These devices often lack support for the proprietary plugins or software standards required to run traditional DRM.
Variable Device Environments: Edovo does not have administrative control over the underlying firmware or software enabled on every device across different facility partners.
Ensuring Accessibility: Because we lack the ability to test DRM-encrypted files on every specific device configuration in the field, moving to active DRM would risk making content completely inaccessible to learners at various facilities.
By utilizing environmental controls rather than file-level DRM, we ensure that publishers retain control and copyright protections are respected, while guaranteeing that learners experience content as usable, reliable, and educational.
